Relevance between College Life Stress, Emotional Intelligence, Happiness and Smartphone Overuse of College Students in Health-related Department

Abstract
Purpose: As the usage of smartphones becomes universalized, consequent social influences have been appearing
diversely. This study was conducted to provide basic and relevant data in developing preventive intervention program of smartphone overuse by determining the frequency of smartphone usage of college students in Health-related department and its influences in relation to frequency.

Method: To determine the factors influencing college senior students¡¯ smartphone overuse, 367 college senior students in G Province were selected. Categorizing the top 25% of smartphone over users as the high frequency group and the low 25% as the low frequency group, the differences between the two groups regarding general characteristics, college life stress, emotional intelligence and happiness were analyzed.

Result: Compared with the low frequency group, the high frequency group smartphone usage was a high priority (p=<.001) in their daily living. Text messaging was more frequent, and the stress level was notably high (Explanatory Power, 81.7%) regarding their study (p=.034), future &employment (p=.023).

Conclusion: College students¡¯ smartphone overuse was highly relevant with the level of stress in their college life. Therefore, development of preventive intervention program is recommended
